MECKLENBURG COUNTY, N.C. -- CSX train company is now investigating to see what lead to the head-on collision involving one of its high rail pick-up trucks and train.

A company spokesperson tells NBC Charlotte, the train was carrying a single load of lumber at the time of the accident.

No one on the train was injured, but the worker in the truck suffered non-life threatening injuries.

It happened around 1pm, half a mile from the railroad crossing near Belmeade Drive and Mt. Holly Road in Northwest Charlotte.

Battalion Chief Stanley Reed says their crews went to several different locations at first, because fire and emergency trucks could not get to the crash site.

They tried using a 4X4 vehicle in the rocky terrain, but uncertain the extent of the worker's injuries, crews on scene decided to hoist him on the stretcher and walk the half mile down the tracks.

"We used that gator to get to the location, but due to lots of rocks on the tracks we had problems. We had to walk the victim out. We were trying to ride the victim on the gator, but that didn't work," said Reed.

The high-rail pick-up is equipped to ride on railroad tracks and often used to conduct inspections and maintenance.
