10-year-old crashes two miles from home after taking car keys

MOORESVILLE, N.C. -- A 10-year-old ended up in the hospital after he stole his parent's car keys and crashed their car.

Mooresville Police say the child took the keys Tuesday night without his parent's knowledge.

He drove about two miles before crashing the car into another vehicle. According to published reports, the wreck occurred around 5:50 p.m. at the intersection of Shearers Road and Faith Road when the boy failed to stop at a stop sign.

The 10-year-old was transported from the scene to Lake Normal Regional Medical Center for treatment. He was later released with minor cuts and bruises, authorities say.

The other driver was not transported to the hospital but sought further independent medical treatment, police say.

No charges have been filed.
