Teen dies from injuries in east Charlotte shooting

The hunt is on for the gunman who shot a 15-year-old over the weekend.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- A 15-year old boy shot Sunday afternoon in east Charlotte has died and the shooter is still on the loose.

Zavier Ellis was a couple months shy of his sixteenth birthday. It is now a birthday the teen will never get to see.

Someone shot Ellis outside of a home in the 8000 block of Sherington Way, in the middle of the day, just a few feet away from his own home.

Neighbors on the street say they are stunned by the shooting.

"It's a quiet street, nice neighborhood, but we're very sad to hear that," said Martiza Romero. "I just can say we have to pray for our kids and our families here in this city because we need to pray for our families," she said.

Prayers have been pouring in for the last few days for Ellis, who had been hospitalized after Sunday's shooting. He lost his fight Tuesday night. Neighbors say he was his mother's only son.

"It's so sad, he get the bus with all the children," said Romero. "It was very surprising, very sad," she said.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call 704-432-TIPS. The public can also call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
