CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) -- A convicted murderer alleges in a federal lawsuit that Anson County prison officers cracked his skull with a baton during a prison riot three years ago and destroyed a surveillance video that captured the excessive force.
The Charlotte Observer reports (http://bit.ly/WMLkpe ) that inmate Kevin Brower's lawsuit accuses officers at Lanesboro Correctional Institution of handcuffing, then kicking him, in November 2009. Brower was later treated for a hairline skull fracture and a three-inch cut.
Brower is serving a 45-year prison sentence for second-degree murder.
Inmate Lorenzo Ingram filed a separate lawsuit related to the same riot. His lawsuit contends a surveillance video shows an officer repeatedly striking him in the head.
State prison officials declined to comment on pending lawsuits. They have said several officers were seriously injured in the riot.
