CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Two people were rushed to the hospital Tuesday night after a woman crashed her Smart Car into the back of a Department of Transportation dump truck, according to officials.

The accident happened at the scene of a sinkhole that opened up on Providence Road near Queens Road earlier Tuesday morning.

Witnesses told NBC Charlotte that the woman was driving erratically and at a high rate of speed before she crashed into the DOT truck, which was there because of the sinkhole.

She was taken to Carolinas Medical Center with life threatening injuries.  Another person was also taken to CMC, with minor injuries.

A man was in the DOT truck, but officials tell NBC Charlotte he was not injured.

No charges had been filed as of Tuesday night.

The crash was the second delay in the sinkhole repair project.  Earlier in the afternoon, crews damaged a sewer pipe.  It had to be repaired before crews could continue fixing the cracked storm water pipe and repaving the road.

All lanes were opened on Providence Road at 5 a.m. Wednesday. Crews were able to make all repairs and reopen the road just before the morning rush hour.

They closed part of Providence Road at 9 a.m. to finish up the work on the sinkhole.
