Teens charged after pipe bomb found on campus

ROWAN COUNTY, N.C. -- Two Rowan County teens were charged after authorities said a suspicious device was found on school property Friday.

Two 13-year-old students from Southeast Middle School were charged with felony possession and manufacture of a weapon of mass death and destruction and possession of a weapon on school grounds.

Both students were also suspended from school, according to authorities.

The Rowan County Sheriff's Office said a pipe bomb was discovered in the possession of one of the students. The second student was also identified as being involved in the manufacture of this device.

Detectives interviewed both suspects, and responded to both suspect's homes, but no additional devices were discovered. Through the course of the investigation, detectives determined the suspects had possessed the device at school, but had no intent to use the device at school.

It appears the device was intended to be used in a wooded area near one of the suspect's homes, according to authorities.
