LANCASTER, S.C. -- Detectives in Lancaster are investigating after a 2-year-old was fatally shot in the chest Monday night.
According to authorities, police responded to a reported shooting at a home on East Dunlap Street. Lancaster Police Chief Scott Grant confirmed a little after 11 p.m. Monday that the boy died at Springs Memorial Hospital.
"It's about as bad as it gets," said Grant.
According to Grant, investigators are working to determine if the shooting was accidental in nature. Authorities have not identified the child that was killed. Authorities identified the child killed as 2-year-old Jacarion "Cari" Gladden.
"We're investigating it as a death and we'll let those facts determine whether it was an accident or something else," Grant said."
An autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday.
