5 things you need to know Thursday

After powerful storms moved through the area Wednesday, Thursday morning will be calm with temperatures in the mid-to-upper 60s.

1. Hundreds without power following powerful storms

Hundreds of people are waking up across Charlotte without power after powerful storms swept across the region Wednesday afternoon. Several homes were struck by lightning during the outbreak and a number of trees were also knocked down.

"It sounded like a freight train coming," said one woman, whose cars were crushed by a huge tree knocked down by the storm.

2. Mom accused of 'drugged driving'

A Rock Hill mother is facing charges after police say she got behind the wheel with her two children after taking medication earlier in the day.

A Taco Bell store manager noticed that 29-year-old Lauren Conway appeared impaired when she made her way through the parking lot with her kids. Police say that Conway had no alcohol in her system, but she had taken about 40 mg of Prozac.

Earlier this week, professional golfer Tiger Woods was charged with DUI after he was found asleep behind the wheel of his car. Woods blamed the DUI on prescription medication.

3. Getting paid to lose weight?

It's not every day you hear of a man losing more than 200 pounds. But what if you were told his company paid to make it happen?

Scott Purvis says he has always struggled with his weight, reaching nearly 500 pounds two years ago. After seeing multiple doctors, his employer approached him with an offer: they would pay for him to go to the Duke Fitness Center, where he'd learn to eat right and exercise from some of the best in the country.

“My walls were starting to come in on me," he said. "I knew I had to do something. I was about to turn 50 and I knew that if I did not change my ways I wasn’t gonna be around. The energy level and excitement I have for life is tremendous now."

4. Man pleads guilty to sexually assaulting children at his church

A Charlotte man pleaded guilty to two counts of first-degree sexual offense with a child Wednesday after police say he sexually assaulted children at his east Charlotte home.

Nicolas Vasquez, 41, allegedly abused male and female victims between the ages of 9 and 12, police say. Court documents show that Vasquez's wife found photographic evidence that led to his arrest, including videos and photos of Vasquez in different stages of undress. He was sentenced to 24 years in prison.

5. President Trump to announce decision on climate agreement

President Trump announced on Twitter Wednesday night that he intends to reveal his decision on the Paris climate agreement Thursday afternoon.

Preliminary reports indicate that Trump intends to withdraw from the agreement. If the U.S. secedes from the alliance, it would become only the third nation out of 197 that is eligible to participate in the agreement, joining Syria and Nicaragua.

The aim of the Paris agreement is to gradually reduce emissions that cause climate change in order to prevent a major increase in the global temperatures that could raise sea levels, spark major droughts, and lead to more dangerous storms. When it took effect in 2016, environmental groups and political leaders heralded it as a critical step in trying to reverse man-made ravages on the global environment.
