CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Mecklenburg County has changed the way it hires people as a direct result of a NewsChannel 36 I-Team report.

Reporter Stuart Watson started asking questions after the Department of Social Services hired several people, who had political connections, despite the county's hiring freeze.

County commissioners met behind closed doors on Wednesday. They decided all applicants were treated equally and the DSS made good hires.

One of the biggest complaints was over the hiring of Samara Foxx, wife of councilman and mayoral candidate Anthony Foxx. She was hired after the job had been posted for one day.

DSS Director Mary Wilson said on Wednesday that she interviewed more than 30 people for the position before hiring Samara Foxx.

"She was hired by a posting on the county Web site. She applied along with probably 38 or 39 other people and she was selected," Wilson said.

Wilson said that all applicants were evaluated equally.

County Manager Harry Jones has now decided that, in the future, offices must post openings for at least six business days.
