Counselor convention focuses on jobs
CHARLOTTE, N.C.-- The Queen City is hosting a gathering of about 4,000 professional counselors to discuss how to cope with the economy, from both professional and psychological perspectives.
The annual event is organized by the American Counseling Association and runs through Monday.
Job counselors were in attendance and said there are steps job seekers can take to turn their situations around.
"This is a time for creativity, this is a time for transformation," said Dr. Michael Lazarchick, a career counselor. "You have to look at your skills and abilities and all the things that you've learned all through your life. You have to look at what you have to sell. Network, and talk to people that you know who are finding out about things that are out there."
Other counselors point to the psychological effects of the economic downturn.
They say it is important to acknowledge those feelings but also focus on what is important.
"Connect, don't isolate," said Dr. Colleen Logan, president of the American Counseling Association. "Connect, nurture your relationships, nurture your family and have hope about the future. There's hope, there's a new tomorrow, there's a future. It makes a difference just thinking, rethinking what's happened."
