RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — A 22-year-old North Carolina state trooper who said he was fired because he lied about the fate of his $45 hat is fighting his dismissal.
Thomas Wetherington told The News & Observer of Raleigh that losing his job in a misunderstanding about his hat is especially galling considering some troopers who had sex in their patrol cars have stayed on the force.
Wetherington lost his hat during a March traffic stop in Craven County. He first said he was wearing it when it blew off and was run over. But the hat turned up undamaged weeks later and Wetherington admitted he had put it on his car before he lost it.
A review committee says Wetherington should be reinstated, but the Highway Patrol hasn't hired him back. A patrol spokesman wouldn't talk about the situation.
