RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — AAA Mid-Atlantic expects more Virginians on the highways this Thanksgiving weekend.
The auto club says about 1.5 million Virginians are expected to travel 50 miles or more from home. That's an increase of 3 percent over the holiday weekend last year. Nationally, AAA is projecting a 1.4 percent increase in travel.
Most travelers will be going by car, as air travel is expected to decline by at least 6 percent both nationally and in Virginia.
To make things easier for motorists, the Virginia Department of Transportation is suspending lane closures for construction and maintenance on major highways from noon Wednesday until noon Monday, Nov. 30.
