CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- For Sonny Dixon, it's a birthday gift he'll never forget.
"On my way home actually," Sonny said. "From picking up my birthday gift."
He just turned 74.
"It was raining so hard, I couldn't see anything at all," Sonny said. "All of the sudden, I heard this loud noise... Ka-Pow! Sounded louder than a gun."
A massive tree toppled on top of Sonny's Corvette.
"Did you recline the seat?" asked NBC Charlotte's Xavier Walton.
"No, I didn't recline," Sonny said. "I didn't do anything. Force of the tree must have knocked my head forward toward the steering wheel."
"Think to yourself, 'I'm lucky to be here right now?" asks Xavier.
"Absolutely. I thought about it a lot... I prayed."
Sonny's prayers were answered. At 74 and with 22 stitches, he has a new outlook on life.
Despite having bruises all over his body, he says the gift of life is the best birthday gift he had ever received.
