MIDLAND, N.C. -- Few people know about the Midland, a small town of about 3000 between Charlotte and Albemarle.

Even fewer know what you can find there.

“Right now I’m out here digging gold in North Carolina,” said Chris Atkins.

“All of this stuff is hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of equipment... that thing was built in the 1800s,” he says about the equipment that manages to crush rocks and find the gold inside.

Atkins is working on his friend Jimmy's land. The two met working in the movie business 20 years ago.

Under the rain gear and mud is an 80s teen heartthrob.

Atkins starred opposite Brooke Shields in The Blue Lagoon where he is probably best remembered for the loincloth he wore.

“You know people pay me now to not wear the loincloth,“ he joked, “that was a long time ago.”

Now he's preparing to make his directorial debut and he's scouting locations.

“I thought this would be a perfect place to bring this kid’s adventure film.”

Because the place feels like it's straight out of the movies-- 52 acres, supposedly full of 300,000 ounces of gold. At today’s prices, that’s $400 million!

“I mean it’s here some place, you’d have to dig up this entire 52 acres and turn it into a lake to get all the gold out here but there’s a lot of gold out here.”

Atkins is hoping to shoot his movie at the gold mine in late spring.
