CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Animal Control officers seized eight cats from a squalid home in Ballantyne Friday.

A search warrant was left behind in the door of the house on Roseton Lane in the Southgate Commons neighborhood.

The search warrant cites possible inhumane and unsanitary conditions at the house.

One officer said he was able to smell a strong odor of urine and feces when the front door was opened.

Neighbors on the street, like Pam Spurlin agreed.

"It is a nuisance in that the smell is overpowering of ammonia.  If you have a cat and you missed cleaning the litter box one day, so imagine how it was with 10 or 12 cats," she said.

The woman who lives in the house was not home and could not be reached for a comment.
