RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) -- The state chapter of the NAACP and its advocates say public service announcements opposing voter identification laws will begin airing this weekend across North Carolina.

WRAL-TV reported (http://bit.ly/VsEgKf ) that the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, the American Civil Liberties Union, Democracy North Carolina, the Southern Coalition for Social Justice and other groups are mobilizing against any bill requiring voters to present photo identification at the polls.

Republican lawmakers have said they plan to consider a voter ID bill when the Legislature begins next week.  GOP Rep. Harry Warren of Rowan County said North Carolina needs more than books of signatures to ensure elections are fair.

State NAACP President William Barber says the bill shouldn't be on legislators' agenda because North Carolina elections are working.
