GASTONIA, N.C. -- Investigators in Gastonia are looking for the person who set fire to an unoccupied office building on Kyle Court near Bessemer City Road Monday night.

Crews arrived at the scene around 10:30 p.m.  An arson task force spent several hours investigation and combing through evidence.

Gastonia Fire Chief Kerr Foy said the building has been empty about a year.  He said the fire was contained to about two rooms, but most of the building sustained smoke damage.

According to Foy, the fire was set in multiple locations throughout the building.  That was the first sign that that the fire was intentionally set.

"It does kind of put you on edge when you  have a fire like this, because you're not sure what you may be coming across.  The fires set the way they were tipped us off that it couldn't be connected," said Foy.

There  were some fires set inside the building that didn't actually burn, and those are important clues for investigators.

Officials estimate the fire caused $50,000 to $60,000 worth of damage.  Anyone with information is urged to call Crime Stoppers.
