CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Police are investigating the possible assault of a 7onth-old baby taken to the emergency room with serious injuries.

The youth division of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department is looking at the case of a baby girl taken to Presbyterian Hospital around 11 p.m. Monday.

The ER staff contacted police because of the extent of the child's injuries. The injuries are listed in a police report as "possible non-accidental" and "serious injury" and "possible internal injuries."

The police report also said that the injuries occurred at an apartment on Idlewild Road where NewsCchannel 36 spoke with a man inside the unit.

He said, "She started chocking on her own vomit. We had to perform the Heimlich on her."

The man did not want to give his name but also said the child's mother is still at the hospital with the baby.

The Department of Social Services is also investigating this case. No charges have been filed.
