MATTHEWS, N.C. -- An area church is easing the pain at the pump. New Beginnings Community Church in Matthews is giving away $20 gas cards to the first 350 people at noon Friday.
By 8 a.m. there was already a line for the Fuel for the Soul event. Many of those waiting said, in a tough economy, the gas cards were well worth the wait.
Kannapolis resident Beverly Dunn was first in line.
"It's taking everything, especially with this big car, it takes everything I got to put in gas."
She planned on filling up her tank and driving to Easter service Sunday. According to John Gloston of Matthews, a $20 gas card goes far.
"It means maybe I was going to put $20 in the gas tank at first, so now I'll put $40 in," he said.
New Beginnings Church chose to do the giveaway on Good Friday for a reason.
"This is the weekend of Jesus' death and resurrection, so we're doing it this weekend in memory of Jesus Christ," said William Bellinger, a volunteer with the church. Beverly Dunn agrees. "I appreciate it very much. I think it's a blessing coming from The Lord up above," she said.
This is the second year for the Fuel for the Soul giveaway. New Beginning Community Church is set to giveaway $7,000 worth of gas cards Friday.
