HARRISBURG, N.C. -- Deondra Scott lost her right arm, and nearly her life, at a boat party on Lake Norman in June 2011.

Scott was struck twice by the propeller of a boat driven by her former co-worker Dennis Allen. Allen is one of the three defendants named in a lawsuit filed by Scott’s attorney last week.

Attorney Adam Seifer said they are asking the boat owner and manufacturer also be held accountable for what happened to Scott.

The 25-year-old told Newschannel 36 she is still adjusting to life after the accident.

“Every part of my body was affected by this except my face and my neck. Every day I wake up and I look in the mirror at my new body and give myself a pep talk,” admitted Scott.

“I am always in pain, but I get excited when I am able to do something like open a Pepsi bottle. I called my friend when I did that the first time. It is a good feeling when you conquer something new each day.”

Scott spent six weeks in the hospital. She did not have insurance and has nearly $1million in medical bills related to the accident.  She said she has already spent all the money she saved from her job as an Olive Garden server paying those bills.

She had hoped to use that money to reach her goal of moving to California to become a singer.

Scott insisted she isn’t abandoning that dream all together, but also wants to use her voice to advocate for stronger boating safety laws.
