ANSON COUNTY, N.C. -- A body was found inside a home destroyed by flames early Monday morning in Anson County.

The Anson County Sheriff's Office is taking the lead on the investigation into the fatal house fire in the 6400 block of Robinson Bridge Road.

Crews responded around 1:15 Monday morning. When the flames were extinguished, firefighters found the body of 72-year-old James McCray near the back door of the home.

Officials say McCray lived alone and had limited mobility.

Investigators believe a space heater in McCray's bedroom may have caused the fire.

The results of an autopsy are pending, and other analysis is in the works before final determinations are made in the fire.
