CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Bank of America, which had contributed thousands of dollars to a charity that's now engulfed in scandal, said Monday afternoon they are shocked at the allegations.
The Charlotte-based company said they have donated and supported various youth prevention and intervention programs, including The Second Mile, led by founder and former Penn State football coach Jerry Sandusky who is now facing multiple child abuse charges.
"Due to the horrific nature of the allegations between the ties to the charity and the founder, Bank of America is evaluating any continued involvement with the organization and is suspending all philanthropic and voluntary contributions to the charity until they know more," the company said in a statement.
Between 2008 and 2010, the Bank of America Charitable Foundation, Highmark Foundation, The Hershey Company and State Farm Companies Foundation all gave $50,000 or more to the charity.
Meanwhile, the president of the charity linked to the Penn State child sex-abuse scandal says he’s resigned.
The Board of Directors of The Second Mile says it accepted Dr. Jack Raykovitz’s resignation Sunday.
In a statement the charity says Raykovitz had been CEO of the charity for 28 years. The vice-chairman of the organization, David Woodle, will now be in charge of day-to-day operations.
The Second Mile says it will be conducting an internal investigation of its programs.
