CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- More than three times as many parking spaces will be available for east Charlotte commuters in September when the Charlotte Area Transit System opens a new Park and Ride lot at the intersection of Albemarle and Lawyers roads.
The leap from 67 spaces at an existing City Sav-A-Lot No. 1 to 231 spaces at the CATS-owned lot that will replace it should come as good news to riders of the 40 X Albemarle Road route as well as the popular 9 Central Avenue route.
The weekday-only 9 route has the second-highest ridership in the local bus system. It begins and ends at the City Sav A Lot No. 1 at Lawyers Road and Idlewild Road North.
More than 905,000 passenger trips were taken on the 9 Central Avenue route in fiscal year 2012.
CATS currently owns and operates four commuter lots and leases 40 lots for those who want to connect with transit service, vanpools or carpools.
The new $1.1 million project is recommended in the 2013-2017 Countywide Transit Services Plan.
The lot will have lock-up areas for bicycles, security cameras, an emergency call box and a glass mosaic tile mural by artist Marcelo Novo. The mural will be on the wall of a small building that will house a restroom and other facilities for CATS drivers.
