CHARLOTTE, N.C. --CMS schools held their annual school fair to promote magnet schools Saturday, this time offering new options to compete with charter schools.

Thousands of parents and students poured into Phillip O. Berry Academy of Technology near Freedom Drive on Charlotte’s west side.

CMS currently offers 37 magnet schools and nine magnet programs.

Among the new offerings is iMeck Academy at Cochrane Collegiate Academy, a public college prep school which issues laptops to every student and offers them internships to pursue careers.

CMS also offers so-called “middle high schools” in conjunction with Central Piedmont Community College.

That’s where high school students can earn up to two years of college credits and save lots of money on college.

A link to the school options application is posted on the CMS schools website.
