FORT MILL, S.C. -- Two people whose car was trapped underneath a tractor-trailer and dragged more than 200 feet escaped the crash with only minor injuries.

A Ford Thunderbird was crushed by a tractor-trailer in a late-night accident Tuesday on Interstate 77 near the North Carolina/South Carolina border.

South Carolina Highway Patrol said the driver of the car made an illegal lane change and ended up stuck underneath the tractor-trailer.

The tow truck driver who responded to the wreck said he was shocked no one was killed.

"I thought there were fatalities, really," said Gene Sloan. "I thought someone was hurt. Then they showed me the driver was standing out there talking. I never did see the other guy, so I don't know. But I figured somebody was dead."

The passenger in the car was taken to a local hospital, but officials said his injuries were not serious.

The driver of the Thunderbird was cited for making an improper lane change.
