MOORESVILLE, N.C. -- An elderly woman was pulled from her sinking car after a Wednesday afternoon crash forced the vehicle into a Mooresville pond.

The crash took place near a pond at N.C. 150 and Flowering Grove Road around 12:15 p.m.  When emergency units arrived they saw an elderly woman in the car as it was sinking.

"A passing citizen jumped into the water and pulled the (woman) towards the shoreline," emergency officials said in a statement.  "Mooresville Fire & Rescue personnel, along with the citizen and two bystanders, pulled the victim out of the water and began medical care."

The 92-year-old woman was taken to Lake Norman Regional Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.

"The actions taken by the first passing citizen directly impacted the survival of the victim – he saved a person’s life today."

It took crews about one hour to pull the car from the pond, and the man who helped save the elderly woman told officials he wishes to remain anonymous.

It's unclear what caused the crash.
