INDIAN TRAIL, N.C. -- A local animal shelter is getting a helping hand from area residents and volunteers across the county.
The Carolina Waterfowl Rescue in Union County is building a new barn after a devastating storm. The Rescue received a $65,000 grant from the Petfinder Foundation. The storm that destroyed the Resuce was months ago, but Executive Director Jennifer Gordon still remembers it well.
"I was trying to run things into the shed to get them out of the rain and all of the sudden the roof just came off," said Gordon.
She says the aftermath was devastating.
"I was here by myself and I think I just sat on the porch and just cried."
On Monday dozens of volunteers from across the nation showed up to start rebuilding.
"The amount of work we get done in two weeks is amazing" said Chloe Brady, a volunteer from Bucks County, Pennsylvannia.
Bryna Donnelly with the Petfinder Foundation says many people are accustomed to rescuing dogs and cats, but when it comes to birds, they often get left out.
"They get hurt just like our normal campaigns do, and they need a place to go when they do," Donnelly said.
The work should take about two weeks. The Carolina Waterfowl Rescue is still looking for more volunteers for the next couple of days from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. If you're interested in helping, call the Rescue at 704-668-9486.
