CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) -- Charlotte officials say a contract employee for the city's transit system embezzled more than $50,000.

The Charlotte Observer reported  that an employee with Central Parking took the money over a two-year period.

Central Parking has handled the paperwork and money for the fines collected from those who ride without a ticket.

The Charlotte Area Transit System and Central Parking signed an agreement Jan. 6 in which Central agrees to refund the money. Central did not admit any wrongdoing.

Olaf Kinard with the transit system says the agency has moved fine collection in-house to avoid future embezzlement.

No arrests have been made.

A police report does not explain how the embezzlement occurred but says the suspect was responsible for accepting payments and then used them personally.
