CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- A south Charlotte middle school was evacuated Thursday afternoon when a lava lamp exploded in a classroom.

The incident took place in a science lab around 3:45 p.m. at Quail Hallow Middle School located at 2901 Smithfield Church Road off Park Road just west of Quail Hallow Country Club.

Firefighters said 11 students were evaluated at the school and released to their parents but there were no reports of injuries.  At least four fire trucks and a few Medic vehicles responded to the school.

Classes dismissed about 15 minutes later than usual around 4:30 p.m.

It's unclear what caused the lava lamp to explode.
