CHERRYVILLE, N.C. -- Cherryville has named a new city manager.

A 1978 Cherryville grad, Ben T. Blackburn will officially assume the title effective December 1.

Blackburn currently serves as the City Manager in Lowell, a job he's held for the last 10 years.

A 1985 graduate of Appalachian State University, Blackburn holds a Bachelor of Science degree, Political Science with concentration in Town, City and County Management.

Previous work experience for Blackburn includes Deputy Tax Collector in Watauga County, Victim/Witness Coordinator for the 24th Prosecutorial District Attorney's Office in Boone, and has served the City of Cherryville as the Planning/Community Development Director, and from 2000 to 2002, Blackburn was the City Manager.

Of the 21 applications the Cherryville City Council received for the position, they say only eight met the job requirements. Mayor Austell says the City Council is committed to Blackburm, saying he has the qualifications and skills that Cherryville so drastically needs.
