Man taken into custody after standoff in east Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Charlotte police arrested man after he barricaded himself inside an apartment and forced two nearby schools to be placed on lockdown Tuesday morning.

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department Violent Criminal Apprehension Team was attempting to take Al Tiran Ashford, 26, into custody for a federal firearms warrant at his apartment off of Perth Court in east Charlotte.

According to police, Ashford refused to come out of his apartment forcing the SWAT team to respond, and making school administrators place Cochrane Collegiate Academy Middle School and Devonshire Elementary School on lockdown for about an hour.

After brief standoff, the SWAT team was able to take Ashford into custody.

CMS said both schools have been lifted off the lockdown.
