CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- A second cold front will be sweeping through the area ushering in really chilly weather.

Showers and thunderstorms that moved through the area on Saturday are now off the Carolina coast.

Dry air will move in from the northwest on Sunday, but it’s also very chilly air.  On Saturday at 7 a.m. it was 56 degrees in Charlotte, but 36 degrees in Cincinnati and 38 in Chicago.

“We will see some of that weather moving in our direction,” Wendel said.

A Freeze Watch has been issued for the mountains for Sunday night through Tuesday morning.

In Charlotte, overnight lows could reach 40 degrees. The record low on Monday morning is 38 degrees.  It will be sunny, but highs Monday will only be in the upper 60s, which is 10 degrees normal for this time of year.

It will be chilly again Tuesday morning with lows near 40 degrees again. The record low for Tuesday morning is 41 degrees.  Highs will be near 71 degrees.

“Tuesday morning is when I think we have a pretty good chance of setting a new record low,” Wendel said.

On Sunday for Mother’s Day there will be plenty of sunshine with highs in the mid 70s.

“On Saturday we reached 81 degrees in Charlotte, but it was humid.  We won’t  have that humidity on Sunday,” Wendel said.

After this brief little cold spell to start the week, temperatures rebound to 80 degrees on Wednesday and 84 degrees Thursday and Friday.
