YORK COUNTY, S.C. -- The York County coroner has ruled that an inmate forcibly restrained in a chair killed himself.
Joshua Grose died early Sunday morning October 12th after repeatedly beating his head against a cell wall.
He had been arrested for running over his own stepmother and a neighbor with a stolen car and killing them.
As many as eight jailers at a time forced Grose into a restraint chair where they strapped him down and put a football helmet on his head.
Video of the incident shown to reporters but not released shows Grose continued to bang his head against the cell wall.
The video also shows one detention officer punching Grose 12 times in the abdomen as he resisted being placed in the chair.
Sheriff Bryant said his officers were compassionate and responded by the book.
