CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Shemika Grant's brief career as a Mecklenburg County Detention Officer came to an end Monday Morning.

On Friday night, the 31-year-old was arrested for shoplifting inside Belk at NorthLake Mall.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police say she tried to steal an inexpensive watch and ran from loss prevention employees.

Once officers caught her she allegedly assaulted one of them.

Sheriff's Department officials say that Grant resigned Monday, ending the Internal Affairs investigation, but did not stop the criminal prosecution.

Grant was hired in December of 2011.

She’s charged with shoplifting and assault.
