CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Road crews are preparing for the inclement weather and road treacherous road conditions.

On Monday, NCDOT pre-treated the bridges and overpasses in preparation for the freezing rain.

Trucks have been fueled and are ready to respond.

Crews began arriving to the NCDOT maintenance yard in West Charlotte at 11pm to be on hand during the anticipated worse of the weather conditions.

Six state trucks are on stand-by in Mecklenburg County, and 10 contracted salt trucks are staged on Interstates.

CDOT crews also brined and salted bridges, culverts, hospital entrances and selected streets within city limits.

At 1am, 12 trucks, 24 crew members and support staff will be on stand-by because the city will operate then under the "Condition A" designation.

CDOT urges drivers to report icy conditions through CharMeck311, and drivers can also check road conditions online before heading out.

AAA of Charlotte says the Thanksgiving week is not only among the busiest travel seasons of the year, but the cold temperatures means a spike in calls for road assistance.

"Maybe 20-35 percent more calls, that come in and we are busy all year round," said Gil Vasquez.

Vasquez, a fleet supervisor for AAA's TowMark near Uptown says more than 70 tow truck operators are working in anticipation for the rise in calls.

"We schedule for it. We get more guys on the road, more trucks on the road, we schedule for overtime," he said.

He says this is the time of year driver don't want to get stranded on the road in the cold and without a plan.
He urges drivers to winterize their vehicles and check car batteries, tires and for fluids.

"Prepping, it's all about prepping. We do preventative maintenance on our vehicles too. We run them a lot, so they need a lot more."
