WAXHAW, N.C. -- An 18-month-old girl died in the hospital after being run over by her father in the driveway of their home.

The scene was off of Providence Road South, in the southern part of Union County, just north of the South Carolina line. The Union County Sheriff's Office says they were called out just before 4 p.m. to the 9400 block of Huey Boulevard in reference to an 18-month-old who had been run over.

The Sheriff's Office tells NBC Charlotte the girl's father was backing his Jeep out of the carport when he hit his18-month-old daughter.

"He hit the girl, because both were playing on the swing set, and they had come around and he didn't see the little girl behind the car, and he just backed up," said neighbor, Daniel Free. His mother, Glenda, tells NBC Charlotte the family moved in just five months ago and that the 18-month-old was the youngest of three girls.

"This is the biggest tragedy ever. It is so sad. I just seen her a couple of weeks ago and held her in my arms, and it breaks my heart that she is gone. She is gone," said Free.

The child was transported to a hospital in Waxhaw, officials say, where she later died. Troopers say she suffered massive head trauma, and was unresponsive at the scene.

The names of those involved, including the deceased toddler, have not been released.  Union County Sheriff's Captain Ronnie Whitaker says, "This is a tragic accident."

He also asked that the public keep the family in their thoughts and prayers.
