CLAREMONT, N.C. -- Authorities have opened all lanes on Interstate 40 east in Catawba County after a deadly tractor-trailer accident early Tuesday morning.
The North Carolina Highway Patrol said a truck driver lost control of his tractor-trailer and hit a bridge on I-40 east near the Oxford School Road exit in Claremont. The tractor-trailer rolled over and caught fire.
The driver of the truck was killed in the accident. Authorities have not released the victim's identity.
The North Carolina Department of Transportation has crews inspecting the structure of the bridge where the tractor-trailer flipped.
"The way everything was, I've never seen anything like that,” said Claremont Assistant Fire Chief Brian Helms. "I've never seen the way that bridge just took everything and peeled everything back."
The accident had closed I-40 east all Tuesday morning as crews worked to clear the scene and inspected the bridge.
