CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- In the midst of one of the strongest winter storms to strike the Charlotte area in years, the Charlotte-Douglas International Airport dealt with several flight changes.

By late Wednesday night, officials say more than 400 flights were cancelled. That's about half of the usual number of flights in and out of the airport. According to FlightStats.com many more were delayed, as well.

Airport officials said they spent the day deicing planes. However, airline operations were reduced by 50 percent.

U.S. Airways said all of their arriving flights will be cancelled before 10 a.m. and all departures before 11 p.m. According to USA Today, Southwest will resume a normal schedule at 11:25 a.m. Thursday.

Eighty passengers stayed in the terminal Tuesday night. Officials urge people to check their flight status before heading to the airport.
