UNION COUNTY, N.C. -- Calls for change with the Department of Social Services in Union County have arisen because of a couple accused of cuffing a child to a porch.

They’re accused of abusing the 11-year-old boy, who was found by police with a dead chicken around his neck. Wednesday, others came forward to say they’ve had problems with Union County’s DSS workers.

About two dozen people showed up for a protest in Union. They came representing different children and causes, but they all strongly believe the same thing: the Union County DSS needs to be cleaned up.

“This case has become about power, greed, bigotry and injustice,” Suzanne Schooler with the group Justice for Jared.

The supporters came to demonstrate against Wanda Larson and her boyfriend Dorian Harper. Larson is also a DSS supervisor in Union County.

One of the supporters in the crowd was Michael Alvarez, the mayor of Indian Trail.

“Actions like this help because it brings to the forefront – it brings attention to the system to the system. Any situation needs attention,” he said.

State authorities are already in town to being their investigation of DSS, but a lot of people who turned out Wednesday morning are not confident they are equipped to get to the bottom of the problem.
