CHARLOTTE, N.C.— The North Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating a crash that killed a driver on Interstate 77 early Monday morning.
It happened around 1:30 a.m. near the exit to West Trade Street.
Troopers tell NewsChannel 36 that the driver of a tractor trailer pulled over and turned on his caution lights because his truck was overheating. They say he was trying to start his truck back up when he felt the thud of a car hitting the back of his trailer.
The driver of the car, identified as 37-year-old John Johnson, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the truck was not injured.
According to troopers, the driver of the car was not wearing a seat belt and never hit his brakes.
