CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Edwin Peacock wants to be Charlotte’s next mayor.
The former Republican city council member and congressional candidate became the first candidate to officially enter the race following incumbent Mayor Anthony Foxx’s surprise announcement Friday to not seek another term.
Peacock said he made the decision today after a morning conversation with Foxx. Both men are out of town on spring break vacations with their families.
Since his unsuccessful congressional bid last year, Peacock said he had told supporters he was interested in the mayor’s race, but did not want to run against an incumbent.
As of Friday morning, he didn’t have to.
“My family and I are excited about this opportunity,” he said in a prepared statement Friday night.
“We have many important issues before us that will shape our city’s future for decades. I’m eager to serve our community.”
Peacock, 43, is a Charlotte native. He and his wife Amy have two children. He is a financial advisor with Northwestern Mutual.
