HARRIS, N.C. -- One person was killed in a boating accident on Badin Lake Thursday afternoon, according to Stanly County EMS.
Authorities said the single-boat accident happened around 11:30 a.m. Thursday on Badin Lake near Palmerville and Beach Roads in Harris. According to officials, the boat made an abrupt left hand turn and crashed into an embankment.
North Carolina Wildlife officials said the passenger, 48-year-old Barry Simmons, from Tennessee, was killed after he was thrown from the vessel. The operator of the boat, 52-year-old Mark McDowell, of Stanly County, suffered minor injuries and was taken to Stanly Regional Medical Center.
The boat was discovered on the embankment near railroad tracks, authorities said.
The cause of the accident is still under investigation and officials said alcohol was not involved in the incident.
