COLLETTSVILLE, N.C. (AP) -- Caldwell County investigators accuse a former school secretary of taking more than $40,000 over a two-year period.
Authorities say 38-year-old Emily Yvonne Hawkins is charged with 10 counts of embezzlement.
According to officials, the arrest follows an investigation that began with a tip to school administrators that money raised by Collettsville School was being taken. Caldwell County Schools Superintendent Steve Stone says an audit by the system's finance department found enough money was missing to call the sheriff's office.
Hawkins began working at the school on July 26, 2010. She was fired on March 26, 2012, which is when the sheriff's office began its investigation.
Secured bond for Hawkins was set at $100,000. It's not known if she has an attorney.
Collettsville is approximately 85 miles northwest of Charlotte.
