CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Johnson C. Smith University is laying off staff members to help reduce its operating budget.

That's according to an internal memo obtained by NBC Charlotte Wednesday.

In the memo, JCSU President Ronald Carter explains to staff and faculty the university needs to reduce its operating budget by $3million.

He wrote about a 15-point plan to achieve that goal.  In addition to the layoffs, steps include: freezing or eliminating open position, renegotiating vendor contracts and implementing unpaid staff furloughs.

JCSU said it would not comment on NBC Charlotte's exclusive report Wednesday, noting it was still putting together a statement it planned for the President to deliver Thursday on the subject.

Sources told NBC Charlotte up to 50 people could lose their jobs, JCSU declined to confirm or deny that number.
