CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Police are investigating after Molotov cocktails were found inside an east Charlotte hotel on Friday morning.

Police were called to the Econo Lodge Inn & Suites at 3000 East Independence Boulevard near Eastway Drive early Friday morning where they found three flammable Molotov cocktails.

No one was inside the hotel room when officers arrived, and a Haz Mat crew was called to dismantle the explosives.

Charlotte Fire Department spokesperson Mark Basnight said it is illegal to make a Molotov cocktail and use one.

Next-door hotel evacuated

Just two buildings away, officers moved to the nearby Golden Green hotel at 3024 East Independence Boulevard and evacuated the building due to smoke around 5 a.m..  It's unlikely that the two incidents are related, police said.

Investigators are still trying to determine what caused the smoke.

No arrests have been made in either incident.
