CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- A high school senior is spearheading a holiday dinner for the less fortunate after she solicited donations through Facebook.
Kyerra Hines, a student at Providence Day School, began requesting help for the meal in September by establishing a web page on the social networking site.
"I did not expect it to be this big," Hines told NewsChannel 36, adding that 125 Facebook "friends" signed up online to donate time and money.
More than $500 was raised, enough to buy turkey, side dishes, and dessert for more than 100 people.
Hines asked her great aunt, Delores Miller, to help prepare the meal.
Miller, the owner of Original Chicken and Ribs on Beatties Ford Road, said she was moved by the teenager's effort.
"That’s what’s wrong for most kids these days is they want everything for themselves," Miller said. "It’s a good opportunity to do something for somebody else."
Second Harvest Food Bank distributed vouchers for the dinner, which will be served from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. Thursday at the restaurant.
All leftovers will be distributed to anyone who stops by the business after 2:30, Hines said.
