WADESBORO, N.C. -- The family of a 13-month-old little girl killed in a Christmas Day accident say they are struggling to understand what happened.

Thirteen-month-old Lexi Hooper was the first grandchild on both sides.

The little girl was asleep in the back seat of her parents Volkswagen on Christmas Day when their car slammed head-on in to another vehicle.

The accident happened on Highway 74 in Wadesboro as the family headed home to Gastonia for the holiday.

Dad Alex and mom Kelsey are both still in the hospital recovering, their family now changed forever.

"They are just fun-loving and full of life; just an ideal couple. They were a picture perfect family, says Kelsey's mother Michelle Mason.

Mason says her granddaughter Lexi was, "A very-loved child, always happy, always happy. She's a treasure to all of us."

The couple in the other car was also hurt; Saundra Davis remains at CMC in fair condition; her husband clay was treated and released.

Police are still investigating the cause of the accident. No charges have been filed.

There is a vigil planned in honor of the Hoopers Monday night at the Dallas Courthouse.
