CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The family who was forced out of their apartment by fire Wednesday is the same family that escaped flames at another unit in May.
Both fires happened at Boulevard Homes in west Charlotte.
In May, five people in the Moss family were home when a wall in the bathroom started smoking. Two cousins ran out downstairs. A third cousin, a nurse, and a premature baby were trapped upstairs. Then 5-month-old Ty'veon Moss was tossed out the window to neighbors below. The nurse, Kathy, was badly burned. She was in the hospital for a month. She was later honored for her heroic efforts.
The initial investigation suggested an electrical cause.
Wednesday, investigators said the fire was started by a child with a firecracker.
In the parking lot of their motel Thursday night, the Moss cousins told us they told the child to stop playing with that firecracker several times. Ty'veon's mom London didn't realize the boy had lit it until it was too late
"By that time, it was all on the beds, all in the kitchen, so I just ran out. I was just trying to get everybody out of the house," London said.
A nurse was once again taking care of Ty'veon upstairs when the fire broke out. This time, they were able to escape through a door. No one was injured.
"I was like, 'Again?'," Crystal Moss said Thursday. The family lost nearly everything in the May fire. What they had--much of it donated--is now covered in soot again. "We cried all day yesterday."
One cousin didn't have shoes on when the fire began. She was walking around Thursday in socks she borrowed.
