ROCK HILL, S.C. -- Fire investigators say a blaze that damaged Owens Hall on the Winthrop University campus started on the building's roof.
Investigators haven't been able to determine how the fire started, but they say it wasn't caused by any type of mechanical malfunction. Investigators have ruled out the mechanical room, heating and air system and elevator system.
Investigators also ruled out an exhaust fan that is located near the section of flat roof between Owens and Bancroft halls where the fire started.
Investigators said the fire appears to be accidental, based on the evidence they have reviewed so far.
The fire started Saturday afternoon and burned for nearly 24 hours. Owens Hall remains closed. The university relocated classes that were held in that building.
