BETHLEHEM, N.C. – A volunteer firefighter was killed during a motorcycle wreck Wednesday afternoon in Alexander County less than a mile away from where he worked.
Caleb Benfield, 18, lost control and went off the road before being ejected from his motorcycle around 1 p.m. on Richey Road in the Bethlehem community.
Benfield, who was wearing a helmet, was taken to Frye Regional Medical Center and was airlifted to Carolinas Medical Center but passed away Wednesday night.
The wreck took place about one-fourth of a mile from the Bethlehem Fire Department where Benfield was a firefighter, and his co-workers responded to the accident.
Speed is not believed to be a factor in the crash.
